COMAL Corner #9
===== ====== ==
by: Joel Ellis Rea
Hello! WOW, was July ever a month
to remember! Particularly that last
weekend. From Thursday the 25th to
Monday the 29th, I was in King of
Prussia, PA. in the Sheraton Valley
Forge Hotel and Convention Center, at
the MARCA Fair. I met wonderful
people, saw wonderful things, and had
a wonderful time. I'll tell you more
about it in 2 articles this month, one
for the COMALites and one for general
interest readers.
Once again, there's a summary of
the weekly Thursday night "Let's talk
COMAL" get-togethers on PlayNET
("COMAL PlayNotes"). This issue
covers the month of July. Because of
the Fair, I couldn't "attend" the
July 25 meeting.
As for programs, how about Conway's
Game of Life? It is written in 0.14,
but is LISTed to disk so it can be en-
tered into 2.0. It is COMAL Kernal-
compatible (assuming C64 text screen),
so no conversion is needed to enter it
into Version 2.0 (cartridge). This
version of Conway's Life is unique in
that it uses the 64's Color Nybble
memory to keep track of how many
"neighbors" each cell has. This re-
sults in a visible effect on the
screen as the program performs its
calculations! Be SURE to read the
ABOUT text before RUNning it!
There is no COMAL Tutor installment
this issue. Next issue's installment
will introduce the single most
powerful aspect of COMAL: Subprograms
(PROCedures & FUNCtions)! We will
convert our CELSIUS program into a
FUNCtion, make another FUNCtion to
convert from Celsius to Farenheit,
and a PROCedure to get input from the
user!
Well, that's all for this month.
If you have a modem, be sure to sign
up with PlayNET and come see me in the
COMAL room every Thursday night
starting at 9:30 Eastern Time.
Captain COMAL will usually be there
as well!
